Midweek Message – January 7, 2026

The Theology and Music of Leonard Cohen Series continues this week. The scripture is 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8; we often hear this scripture passage at weddings, sometimes at funerals, but Paul wasn’t talking about romantic love, he was writing to the Christian community in Corinth. I’ll unpack that a bit more on Sunday. I’m pairing that with Dance Me to the End of Love, you can listen to it below.

Dean is going to play Anthem for us this week, which was the piece of music I was connecting the scripture with last week. I’ve got the words in the bulletin, so you can follow along.

Pastoral Care Training
Caring for one another is the responsibility and privilege of the entire congregation, not just the minister. It belongs to all of us in listening, checking in and showing up for one another. I’m offering training on Thursday mornings 10-11:30: January 8, 15, 22, 29 in the parlour.

Thanks to your generosity, I have a full laundry basket of socks to take to the Street Navigator next week when she returns from vacation, along with $165 in gift cards from donations at Christmas Magic. I’ll make sure to get a picture!

The undecorating has been done… thanks to the church elves… you know who you are. Everything looks a little bare, but we are still following the star. As Leonard Cohen sings, “There’s a blaze of light in every word…”

Some folks have wondered why I connecting Leonard Cohen’s music, a Jewish man and our scriptures. Well, for one thing, over half of our scriptures are from the Jewish Bible and below is a quote from Leonard himself.
